Subhash Desai has strode the social and cultural life of Goregaon like a colossus since last 45 years. From 1962 he has been working for social – political – educational – cultural development of Maharashtra. Looking at his journey of life ‘A gentleman, who has dedicated his entire life for humanity’ wouldn't be a hyperbolic statement. The lifelong journey of Shri. Subhash Desai depicts his concern towards Goregaon and his party Shivsena. Subhash Desai’s burning zeal for social work and public service have all combined to shape the evolved and enlightened personality to lead a settled; happy; well-balanced; well-maintained life for Goregaon residents.
The Shivsena party was founded in 1966. The youth of those days was automatically drawn towards a phenomenon called Shri. Balasaheb Thackeray, his blazing ideals and his clarion call for social development and change. Youngsters of those days could easily perceive that here was a leader who was different from other run-of-the-mill politicians who would promise you the moon and deliver nothing. Balasaheb instead, spoke with genuine conviction; spoke the language of the heart; he had genuine policies and programmes for every section of the people. Subhash Desai, young, energetic and raring to go, was no exception. Entranced and engulfed by the thunderstorm called Shri. Balasaheb Thackeray, he became a strong Shivsainik.
For the progress of masses in all the fields he started ‘Prabodhan Goregaon’ in 1972. Number of projects have been started for serving the Goregaon residents as well as Mumbai suburban residents. Prabodhan has given a recognition to Goregaon in true sense.
Cultural growth has been Subhash Desai’s motto. His ‘Jwalant Hinduvaad’ makes him a true leader fighting for the principles. His invaluable participation in protest for changing ‘Bombay’ or ‘Bambai’ to ‘MUMBAI’ is enormous. Due to his active participation and initiation of many protesting activities and aggressive truth depicting articles, he has also faced many legal cases, but it has never discouraged him to fight for masses.
Goregaon’s residents easily recognize Subhash Desai as an intelligent and studious individual who has the pulse on the intricacies of the people’s problems. Whether it be the founding of Prabodhan Kridabhavan or Joggers Park or a blood bank or Thalasemia centre or Apharesis centre or Library or Abhyasika or Medicine Bank or the completion of the Swatantryaveer Savarkar Flyover or the establishment of a bus depot at Goregaon (East) or Protest against Hawkers in Goregaon station area, Subhash Desai’s vision and involvement is seen and felt everywhere.
Another unique facet of his personality is he not only engrosses himself in constructive work, but also provides encouragement to others doing the same. It is ofcourse, Goregaon’s great fortune to receive Subhash Desai with strong urge of social work and competence of completing the ventures with incredible success.
In 1990, Subhash Desai defeated Sharad Rao from Goregaon in the Vidhan Sabha elections in Maharashtra, but had to quit his post as an MLA following an adverse judicial verdict over the issue of use of ‘Hindutva’ in the election campaign. He and Balasaheb Thackeray were even forbidden from exercising their basic political right to vote for six years. But his in no way daunted Shri. Desai. From and ordinary Shivsainik to the post of the party’s General Secretary, Shri. Desai has displayed his indomitable will-power and fighting qualities. Whatever be the issue, Subhash Desai has approached it with calmness and determination. Therein lies the secret of his popularity.
Shri. Subhash Desai’s achievements have not been confined to Mumbai alone but have extended to the state of Maharashtra. The same commitment and efficiency has been in evidence everywhere. No wonder Balasaheb and Uddhavji entrusted him with the responsibility of carrying out many of the party’s important programmes and Subhash Desai lived upto his supreme leader’s trust each time. He has spared no effort to make Balasaheb’s plans take shape. Be it the publication of Dainik Saamna’ and Dopahar ka Saamna’ or ensuring the grand success of the Shisena’s convention, Shri. Desai has always been active in ensuring their success. No surprise that the Hon’ble Shivsena Pramukh and Hon’ble Karyadhyaksha too respects him.
Number of positions like Shivsena General Secretary, Prabodhan Goregaon Founder, Publisher of Dainik Saamana – Dopahar ka Saamana – Marmik, Trustee – Prabodhan Publication, Project initiator – Prabodhan Kridabhavan – Prabodhan Joggers Park – Prabodhankar Thackeray Library – Ozone Swimming pool and Activity Centre – Sau. Meenatai Thackeray Blood Bank – Blood Collection Mobile Van, MLA – Goregaon constituency have been held by him with tremendous success owing to his intelligence and urge towards masses.
It is for this reason that Subhash Desai is no mere individual, but a saga of social work and public service. His efforts and his personal commitment for social prosperity is noticeable.
Shri. Desai’s family is his social work and his party, but at the same time he also looks after his family members affectionately. Infact the unremitting support given by ‘Sau. Vahini’ has given him his invaluable time for looking after his large family consisting of masses. But at every important moment of joy or sorrow he is there for his family members fulfilling his exact duty towards them as well. Ofcourse now when we look towards his journey, its very clearly understood that from his eyes his family is not limited only to his blood relatives – instead everybody who comes near to him and experiences benevolence of his nature becomes part of his mega family forever with love… affection… gratitude… towards hm. It’s for this reason that Shri. Subhash Desai is felt as support by all Goregaon Resident. Discipline is a must virtue according to him and due to his love people around him accept his annoying also few times which makes everybody around him ‘perfect’ as he wants everybody to be. He is the perfect blend of affection and discipline. His unique virtues and nature of doing social work for a positive cause with scientific base and proper planning with due intensity, is being looked after by not only Goregaon residents but also by people in Maharashtra as a strong support adding to the glory of Maharashtra.
